The highly anticipated theatrical season opens January 12
The beautifully restored Broadway Theatre of Pitman will open its 2007 inaugural show season with Gypsy, beginning January 12 and running through February 3. Gypsy is a timeless story loosely based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous burlesque dancer, and her mother, Mama Rose, otherwise known as "the ultimate show business mother."
With music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Gypsy originally debuted at the Broadway Theatre in New York on May 21, 1959. Now, almost 50 years later, it will be performed as the starting show when the Broadway Theatre of Pitman officially reopens its doors for live theatrical productions. The musical Gypsy was chosen to open the season for a number of reasons, including the fact that Gypsy Rose Lee, along with Sally Rand, performed on the same stage in the 1930s.
Purchased at a sheriff's sale in February by Peter Slack, the Broadway Theatre of Pitman has undergone extensive renovations and has been open to the public since late September, hosting films and special events. Although the Theatre has been welcoming the public for a few months now, the opening of the theatrical season is the most anticipated event thus far - the Theatre will again be a fully operational movie and vaudeville venue with roots dating back to the 1920s.
"Although we've had a number of enjoyable events at the Theatre already, we're all especially excited to open the live theatrical season with Gypsy," said Slack. "There's something very fulfilling about seeing the Theatre returned to the community in all its splendor."
Other upcoming performances being held at the Broadway Theatre of Pitman include The Odd Couple, Nunsense, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Lend Me a Tenor and Oliver!.
Tickets to single theatrical productions can be purchased for $25 per person, but a discounted price is offered through a Theatre Subscription Plan. The Plan includes admission to all six live performances for only $65.
